Ground Transportation: India

There are many options for Ground Transportation in India. Here is a list of common transports and sample fares:

Taxi
Depending on the city/region, traditional taxicabs can be hired from stands or hailed from the street. They are required by law to be registered as commercial vehicles and have a fare-meter, though many drivers prefer to set a pre-paid flat rate. Surcharges will apply for extra baggage, night rides and tolls. Due to safety and convenience, taxis have become more popular in recent years.
Sample Fare: INR 15 – INR 25 per km

Bus

Buses are generally government-owned and provide a convenient and cheap mode of public transportation. Until recently, buses were overcrowded, not air-conditioned, and offered limited access to the disabled. However, new features such as air-conditioning and low-floor lifts are being initiated in cities to improve the system and attract private car owners to decongest roads.

Sample Fare: INR 5 – INR 15 for a local ticket; INR 25 for an A/C bus

Cycle Rickshaw
Cycle rickshaws have an elevated seat in the back with a person pedaling in front. Although banned in several cities for causing traffic congestion, they are still a feature in Delhi and provide a cheap mode of local transport.
Sample Fare: INR 15 – INR 50

Auto Rickshaw
Also called a tuk-tuk, an auto-rickshaw is a three-wheeled motor vehicle for hire. Generally green, yellow or black in color, they have regulated metered fares and are a common fixture throughout the country.
Sample Fare: Meter starts at INR 10, though many drivers prefer to set a flat rate

Suburban Rail System /Metro/Rapid Transit System
Suburban Rail Systems in India are local trains (similar to the American commuter train) and currently operational in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata. The Mumbai Suburban Railway has the largest passenger density in the world, transporting over 6.4 million passengers daily.

The Delhi Metro is air-conditioned and a reliable option for traveling throughout the city. It was also the first Metro in the world to be certified for environmentally friendly construction.

Rapid Transit Systems are currently under construction in Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.
Sample Fare: Delhi Metro ticket is INR 9 – INR 35, dependent on distance traveled; Rail System tickets average INR 25 per ticket

Train

The train stations in India, particularly in large cities, are quite complex and can be very overwhelming. We highly recommend using a transfer representative when applicable, as they can safely navigate entering/exiting the station. Please also keep a safe watch of your valuables. When we do hear of theft, it mainly occurs in or around train stations.

Trains are available for both day and overnight journeys. There are generally three classes of seating: 1st class A/C, 2nd class (A/C or non-A/C), and 3rd class non – A/C. Most travelers opt for 1st or 2nd class, where Western restroom facilities are available and seating is reserved. Depending on your itinerary and class of service, meals are delivered by a server or you may purchase food items from a vendor.

Taking an overnight train in India is NOT similar to European rail travel. (This refers to standard train travel, not luxury rail journeys including Palace on Wheels.) Although the Indian rail system is very reliable, we only recommend it for certain travelers. If you are particularly discerning, train travel can be a sensory overload.

Private Vehicle for Hire
Private vehicles can be hired for the day or a proposed itinerary and offer more comfort and a flexible schedule. Depending on the destination and season, A/C or non-A/C vehicles are available.

What Should I Pack?

I am often asked about what to pack when traveling to India and beyond. What clothes are appropriate? Can I bring candy to the children? Do I need to pack toilet paper? Can I bring my laptop? Here are some answers to your common travel questions:

Can I wear sleveless shirts and shorts in India?
Yes. I often wear tank tops and loose shorts during my travels. However, India is a modest country and I do not suggest wearing anything that is too short, tight, or revealing. I recommend packing loose and comfortable clothing.

What should I bring for the children?
Candy is always a favorable option, though be aware of melted chocolate in your suitcase during summer months! The kids also love pens and small pads of paper.

Can I bring my laptop? Is the internet available?
Yes, internet is available in most destinations. Depending on your region of travel, the connection may be slow and/or limited. You may bring your laptop, but you may not have WiFi available. Please also note that most hotels do charge for internet and WiFi usage.

Is it necessary to pack toilet paper?
It depends on your itinerary, though many restroom facilities only have Indian style toilets and therefore no toilet paper. Also, most train stations and bus stations only have Indian style toilets, so if you will be frequently traveling by rail or bus, it is recommended. I usually carry some sort of tissue in my purse, just in case.

Passport Fees

As you have probably heard in the news, the U.S. Department of State is proposing an increase in passport fees. The proposed schedule is as follows:

$135 for a first-time U.S. Passport Book for adults (age 16 and over)
$110 for U.S. Passport Book renewal (age 16 and over only)
$105 for a U.S. Passport Book for minors (under age 16)
$55 for a first-time U.S. Passport Card for adults (age 16 and over)
$30 for a U.S. Passport Card for adults (age 16 and over) who currently hold a fully valid U.S. Passport
$40 for a U.S. Passport Card for minors (under age 16)
$82 for additional visa pages

*The fee for expedited passport service will remain $60.

The State Department has stated in press releases and on their website that the fees are not just used to process passports but also to assist American citizens in emergency situations overseas. The money is also allocated to invest in fraud protection and expand passport infrastructure and services.

These fees are a significant increase from the present. (A current new adult passport is $100; Renewal is $75; Additional visa pages are free.) If you have been considering obtaining or renewing your passport, it is recommended to do so as soon as possible. No formal date has been released by the State Department on when these changes will be implemented.

Selecting the Best Accommodations for Your Trip

When it comes to selecting accommodations in India and Nepal, there are many options: International Branded Hotels, Guest Houses, Havelis, Boutique Hotels, Ecotourism Lodging, Hostels, Luxury Hotels, Forts, Palaces, and Heritage Hotels - just to name a few! Travelers of all budgets and interests can find suitable lodging, and often there are too many options available. There is also the challenge of selecting accommodations that match the traveler's standards - a 3 star hotel in India, for example, may not be considered a 3 star hotel in France. Here is a brief summary and price point of common accommodations:

$$$ - Deluxe
$$$$ - Superior
$$$$$ - Luxury

Forts, Palaces, and Havelis
Many Forts, Palaces, and Havelis (private mansions) have been converted to hotels and offer a truly authentic experience. These accommodations have a star rating and can offer services similar to a larger hotel. International Branded Hotels
This includes Hyatt, Marriott, Ramada, InterContinental, etc. These hotels have a star rating and generally offer upgraded facilities and amenities, including a fitness center, room service, air-conditioning, swimming pool, and on-call doctor. $$$ - $$$$$

Ecotourism Lodging
These facilities benefit the environment and local people. Usually the property requires a minimum stay, and there are mandatory traveler responsibilities. In India and Nepal, most eco-friendly properties provide basic amenities and limited services but provide the guests with an opportunity to directly contribute to the indigenous sustainability. $ - $$$

Luxury Hotels

Luxury hotels cater to the discerning traveler who seeks the absolute best in facilities and services, including silver-plated dinners and Mercedes for transport. Local Hotels and Inns

These properties can be owned and operated by a larger hotel chain but are established within India and Nepal. Local chains cater to most budgets, from Economy - Superior, and offer services synonymous with the category. The hotels' location is what often contributes to its rating, so be sure to verify its distance to preferred attractions and public transportation. $ - $$$$

Guest Houses

Guest Houses are an excellent option for travelers seeking local lodging. Similar to a Bed and Breakfast, Guest Houses generally offer rooms with attached bathrooms and meals prepared by the owner. Often, these accommodations lack a full-time staff and are located in residential areas of the destination. Guest Houses may or may not have A/C and often have a star rating, though this rating may be self-proclaimed and not granted by the MT. $ - $$$ Pictured Above: Guest House in Ladakh

Hostels
Hostels provide shared accommodations (although private rooms may be available) where guests can rent a bed in a dormitory setting. The rooms can be co-ed or single-sex and commonly share a bathroom and lounge. These accommodations generally cater to backpackers and other budget travelers. Hostels may or may not have A/C. $

Whether you select an economical guest house or luxury hotel, the hospitality in India and Nepal is unlike any other part of the world. Gracious, patient, and accommodating, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you remember the destination - and lodging - positively.

My trip can be summed in one word: Transformed. As you know, I was planning this trip to India for many months. The sites, temples, and food was an anticipated highlight, as well as engaging with the locals. However, I was not anticipating the moment I shared with a local Indian woman in Rajasthan.

She looked less financially privileged but was still a vision of opulence in her blue and orange saree. Her melodic voice carried down the street - almost like a siren. My eyes filled with tears and I stood on the street with my tears dotting the dusty lane. This moment did something to me. It reminded me that at the core, we are all people who want to feel loved, secure, and safe. India transformed me. And all because of a "random" encounter on the streets of Jodhpur.

Holi: The Festival of Colors

It is almost time for Holi, the Festival of Colors! Holi is a Hindu celebration that occurs at the end of the winter season on the last full day of the lunar month Phalguna. As bonfires are lit to signify a devotion to Lord Vishnu, the God of Preservation, people gather and throw colored powder and water at each other. Depending on the region, the festival can last up to sixteen days. This year, the main day of Holi is on March 1.

Holi received its title as the 'Festival of Colors' from the Hindu God Krishna, who is a reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. Krishna enjoyed playing pranks, including using colored powder and water on the villagers. Here is a local bin of powder in Delhi:

Many travelers are not sure what to expect during Holi, and for good reason. Many kids make a game out of throwing powder on the foreigners - even hiding in the trees to sprinkle handfuls of red, green, blue, and gold powder on the heads of unsuspecting tourists. Some people also mix bhang in the food and drinks. The celebration is truly a spectacle in the streets, as people come together to remove sorrow and make life more colorful.

Independent Itinerary vs Customized Package

For those travelers who prefer a flexible schedule, I recommend an Independent Itinerary, or II. An II allows you to confirm certain elements of your trip, including hotel or flight reservations, but keep the daily activities optional. If you prefer to add a tour, cooking class, home visit, cultural event, or other feature, you are given a list of contacts in each city who can assist in coordinating the details as requested.

A customized package is an ideal selection for those who prefer to have the tours, accommodations, and transportation reserved prior to departure.

Here is a sample of both a Customized Package and Independent Itinerary:

Arrival: March 5 Arrive at Delhi International airport. You will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel. March 8: Jaipur After breakfast, proceed on a full day tour of Jaipur. Start with a visit to Amber Fort. The final descent to this ancient city is made by elephant back—a truly memorable experience! In the fort, you will see magnificent palaces and halls covered with mirrored mosaics. En-route to Amber, view the `Palace of Winds’, otherwise known as Hawa Mahal. The honeycomb structure of red and pink sandstone was an elaborate facade behind which the ladies of the court used to watch the daily life in the street below.

In the afternoon, visit the city of Jaipur: City Palace, a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture that is still occupied by the Royal family; and Jantar Mantar, the astronomical observatory. Travel Tip: Food and Water

Often, travelers in India experience gastrointestinal discomfort, commonly termed Delhi Belly. Some fault the food preparation while others blame the water source. The symptoms usually lessen after 24-48 hours without any medication. Here are a few suggestions for staying healthy during your trip:

Food
1. To be safe, we recommend not eating at roadside stands. The food may not be cooked or cleaned properly. We have seen too many travelers become ill from a desire to eat "authentic" at these locations.
2. Pack a digestive relief: Tums, Pepto Bismol, etc.
3. Grapefruit seed extract is a natural defense to unfamiliar bacteria. The extract is available at most natural food stores and nutrition/vitamin shops.
4. As a precaution, some clients request an antibiotic from their doctor before travel. Please consult your physician.
5. Only eat fruits and vegetables that have a thick peel. Examples: bananas, mangoes, oranges, squash, eggplant, and peppers. Also, be cautious about salads. The lettuce is often washed in tap water.

Water
1. Only drink bottled water during your trip. Be sure to check for sealed and untampered caps.
2. Many hotels have a water purification system. (Exception: Most hostels and guest houses do not have an independent system.) Therefore, it is generally safe to use tap water to brush your teeth. If you have concerns, please ask the property or use bottled water for all activities.
3. Iodine tables are usually not necessary, unless your itinerary includes trekking and/or remote destinations. We will let you know if iodine tablets are recommended for your particular package.

Featured Destination: Pondicherry

Pondicherry (or Puducherry) is located in Southern India on the Bay of Bengal. The city was developed by the French and often termed the "French Riviera of the East." Because Pondicherry provides a unique integration of Indian and European heritage, it has become an increasingly popular tourist destination.

In addition to offering stunning ocean views, delicious seafood restaurants and quality shopping, there are two other notable attractions: Sri Aurobindo Ashram, one of the most famous and wealthiest ashrams in India, and Auroville, a universal township whose residents from all over the world live in peace and progressive harmony.

January - March is considered the temperate (and therefore most popular) season. Summer lasts from April - June, followed by the humid season until September. The Northeast Monsoon usually sets in by October and lasts until December. There are three fundamental elements in keeping our costs low:

1. Advertising: Sodha Travel does not advertise in high-budget forums, sites, or publications. To us, the best form of advertising is client referrals. By keeping marketing costs low, there is no need to charge our clients more.

2. Overhead: We keep our office costs low. This includes our "green" philosophy of emailing as many documents as possible to eliminate printing costs. We also continually research and negotiate all office expenses, including phone/internet, credit card vendors, and office supplies.

3. Our Name: We are not an internationally branded name like many of the other travel companies. This allows us the flexibility to negotiate costs directly with our overseas operators. Who is Ganesha?

We often receive questions from our clients about Ganesha: Just who is this elephant-headed deity and what is its significance?

Ganesha, also known as Ganesh and Ganapati, is one of the most recognized and widely worshipped deities in Hinduism. Although the image is commonly found throughout India, Nepal and other areas of South Asia, many people worldwide have a particular fondness for Ganesha, regardless of religious affiliation.

Most recognized by his elephant head, Ganesha is revered as the Remover of Obstacles and God of Luck and Good Fortune. Therefore, he is honored at the beginning of rituals and ceremonies and worshipped on many religious and secular occasions. Ancient texts state that Ganesha was born with a human head to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. When Ganesha came between his father and mother during a dispute, Shiva beheaded his son. Shiva then replaced his head with that if an elephant. There are numerous variations to this story, though the above is commonly narrated.

India Visa Updates!

Due to the abuse and misuse of the tourist visa, there have been recent changes to the amount of allowable entries into India. There should now be a gap of at least two months between two separate visits to India. A tourist visa is granted to foreigners who do not have a residence or occupation in India and whose sole objective in visiting the country is recreation, tourism, or visiting family and friends. No other activity is permissible and the visa cannot be extended. Also note: the two-month gap is only applicable to tourist visas and not business, employment, student, medical, or other visa categories.

For tourist visa holders who wish to visit India within two months of their last visit, a letter is requires that shows 1)the urgency of the visit, as it pertains to recreation and 2)the visit is not due to business, research, employment, etc. Regardless of the visa duration, a foreigner may only stay in India for a maximum of 180 days (6 months) on each visit.

Kumbh Mela 2010

Kumbh Mela is a mass Hindu pilgrimage that occurs four times every twelve years. The celebration dates are according to Indian astrology and calculated based on the zodiac positions of the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter. Kumbh Mela rotates among four locations: Prayag, Allahabad; Haridwar; Ujjain, and Nasik. Starting January 14, 2010, Kumbh Mela will take place in Haridwar.

The common accommodations during the event are tented campsites along the Ganges River. With less than a month until the celebration, there are limited sites remaining so please let us know if you have interest in attending this holy gathering.

Christmas in India

"I saw so many people decorating their homes with lights and decorations for the Christmas holiday. I suppose I always viewed India as a country that practiced Hinduism, Islam, and Sikhism, but it was a surprise to see so many getting excited about the holiday. Are there really that many Christians in India?"

Approximately 2.3% of India's population is Christian, equating to almost 28 million people! (This is even more than the 1.9% who follow Sikhism.) Also, many Indians enjoy celebrating Christmas in the secular tradition by sharing gifts and decorating their homes. It is becoming more widely celebrated as Western traditions permeate the society. Fun fact: Because Christmas trees are rare, many instead decorate their plants or buy small house trees for the occasion.

Tip: Domestic Baggage Allowance

For those of you flying between destinations in India, please remember that most domestic airlines only allow for one checked bag at 45 pounds (20 kg) and one carry-on bag at 22 pounds (10 kg). Fees may apply for additional and/overweight luggage, so please pack accordingly - especially since most international carriers allow two bags per passenger.

For travel by land (trains, buses, etc) there is no weight limit. However, there are no trolleys at the train and bus stations, so luggage must be carried by yourself or a porter. If you are traveling as a group tour, the baggage allowance will be stated in your itinerary.

While it is true that some card companies offer flight and baggage protection, these policies are generally limited. Destination: Ladakh

Ladakh is a remote region in Jammu and Kashmir in Northern India. Located between the Himalayan and Kunlun mountain ranges, Ladakh consists of two districts: Leh and Kargil. Historically, the region was a Buddhist kingdom and was strategically placed at the crossroads of major trading routes. Ladakh is commonly called "Little Tibet" and many travelers have discovered this destination as an alternative to visiting the disputed territory of Tibet.

Communication in India: Internet, Phone Calls and WiFi

A few quick facts about communication accessibility in India:

The internet is widely available in most Indian cities, either in hotel business centers or internet cafes. Some hotels do charge for internet usage, based on an hourly rate. Many hotels are wifi accessible, though most do charge a service fee.

There are many options for phone usage. You may call directly from your hotel room, though rates are usually at a premium. The local phone booths are an affordable option. The codes marked on the booth indicate the following:

PCO: Local (within the state)
ISD: International
STD: Interstate (within India)

If you plan on using your cell phone, we strongly recommend calling your provider prior to departure to determine the international rates for calls, texts. and internet. You may also elect to purchase a temporary cell phone or SIM card in India, which allows friends and family to reach you throughout your trip. Incoming minutes are generally free and there are different plans available, depending on usage.

Lake Periyar: Suspended Boating Services

On October 1, a boat operated by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) capsized in Lake Periyar in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Thekkady. As a result of the accident, the government has temporarily suspended all boating and rafting activities until further notice. Responsible Tourism

I just finished reading a wonderful book by Amitabh Kant titled Branding India: An Incredible Story. Although the publication is currently unavailable in the United States market, I was fortunate to have a friend send it from India. The book explores how India developed and expanded its tourism platform after 2002, including the launch of the Incredible !ndia campaign. As Kant states, "How do you bring a magnificently diverse country - with twenty-eight states, seven union territories, eighteen official languages, and 1.2 billion people - under one brand?" Quite an accomplishment.

One of the topics Kant discusses is the promotion of Responsible Tourism: people who believe in leaving the destination a better place than when they found it. Kant writes, "Responsible Tourism will contribute by maintaining both the natural and cultural heritage of the destination, conserving the living culture of the people and attracting the right kind of visitor." Many travelers in the United States also brand this type of travel Eco-tourism, although the technical definition of Eco-tourism is environmental and not cultural preservation. With a growing interest in green/sustainable energy, many are also requesting tours that incorporate these same elements in their travel package.

Intention and action are very important components of Responsible Tourism. However, I also believe it is the information we share upon returning home after our travel experiences. Not liking particular components of a destination, ie hotels, weather, crowds, etc, should not be expressed as disrespect for cultural practices. We all have our preferences and enjoy different activities. Some prefer luxury accommodations and scheduled touring while others prefer modest accommodations with a leisurely itinerary. However, there are times when people return home from a trip, not just to the Indian sub-continent, and talk condescendingly about a particular culture. I feel it is our responsibility as international travelers - or global participants, as I like to call it - to try and see the beauty in traditions, even if they are a complete reversal from our own. I personally find that 99% of the time, there is a deeper meaning as to why people did not like the country. It had nothing to do with the cultural aspects, but was instead something else. In the end, let us try and appreciate the diversity itself without judging the why or how. And, most importantly, let us responsibly communicate these opinions from a place of consideration.

Kerala: 100% computer connected!

Starting in November, all of Kerala will have access to internet access, making it India's first state with high-speed connectivity in every village.

Currently, Kerala boasts around 1,450 villages. The project is an undertaking by the state government to make the state 100% e-literate. When the campaign started last year, all but approximately 175 villages had broadband connectivity. Only nine villages, in inaccessible areas, remain to be connected.

According to the Memoirs of India blog site, "Broadband connectivity also provide services like eFiling of income tax returns, getting online applications of the public services examinations, and getting application forms for various purposes from the websites of the state government."

Recently, an AOL Travel column highlighted the do's and dont's when reading travel reviews. It is all too common that travelers read certain reviews of properties and destinations, only to be given misinformation or unreasonable expectations.

Almost daily, clients contact us with specific hotel requests based on online reviews. We always encourage travelers to do their research, but also recommend the guidance of professionals. More often than not, the hotels that clients request lead to disappointment while the alternate properties exceed all expectations.

Our advice is to diversify the online research. Go beyond the standard sites of tripadvisor.com, hotels.com, and travelpost.com. Talk to your friends and family and make a list of concerns and possibilities. Then, discuss it with a travel professional. It is our job to plan the best trip for you from an objective perspective. After all, we don't want you to have our experience - we want you to have your experience!

2010 Commonwealth Games: Delhi, India

The Commonwealth Games will be held in Delhi, India from October 3-14, 2010. For the past few months, we have been receiving inquiries about the best time to reserve accommodations and services. Many of you have inquired about Lufthansa's nonstop service from PDX - FRA. Sadly, this route is being suspended as of September. Additionally, the NW/Delta nonstop from PDX - AMS will be cut back to a limited number of flights per week. We are hoping that Lufthansa will resume the service in Spring 2010 to serve our PDX clients!

New Regulations Regarding Passenger Names on Airline Tickets

Here’s a new rule that you should know about. Middle names that are included on passports and drivers' licenses will soon have to be reflected on the passenger's ticket when they fly within the US, and by December if they fly overseas.

The requirement from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is supposed to make it easier for travelers, airlines and the TSA to avoid ID hassles at airports. Because the master lists of questionable travelers are apparently in full-name format, the TSA wants to make sure that travel documents conform to its lists. The requirement was supposed to take effect May 15 for domestic travel, but has been pushed back a month or so. The new rule apparently stipulates that passengers must travel under their name as it appears on the ID utilized to board their flight. That typically means a passport or a driver's license domestically, and a passport or "enhanced" driver's license internationally. Under the new rule, when making flight reservations, each airline is supposed to obtain the full name of the passenger and pass it along to the TSA. The ticket and/or boarding pass should exactly match the identification used. The TSA has announced that it will be lenient in case of small differences.

An Emotional Return

We recently returned home after visiting friends and family in Delhi. As always, it took us about 7-10 days to readjust to the life and energy of the Western world.

We are often contacted by clients after their return home from India and Nepal, asking us if it is normal to feel so emotionally jolted. They feel "transformed" or "rejuvenated" or even "melancholy" - all associated with what we term the Indian Energy. It is a common sentiment that India changes people. I once wrote an article for Little India magazine titled It Was Only Meant As A Vacation: How India Sends Tourists On An Unexpected Journey Of Self-Discovery. In it, I questioned the source of this shift: "So what ultimately causes this change? Coincidence? Divine Intervention? Karma? Wisdom? Destiny? I like to think it is an entity that encapsulates every possibility: Mother India. She penetrates the spirit with simplicity and realism. Then again, perhaps I should refrain from labeling the phenomenon and just cherish its mystery. Defining its essence may damage the true nature of its existence."

Yes, even we feel differently after each time returning home from the Indian Subcontinent. It never ceases to amaze us how each of you have a powerful story or experience from your Indian journey and we appreciate you taking the time to share it with us. After all, this is why we do what we do - it gives us joy to coordinate travel to a place that creates more than memories.

The Indian Rail System

In March, we had many clients comment on the Indian rail system. Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to remind our clients about the reality of taking an overnight train in India.

The train stations in India, particularly in large cities, are quite complex and can be very overwhelming. We highly recommend using a transfer representative when applicable, as they can safely navigate entering/exiting the station. Please also keep a safe watch of your valuables. When we do hear of theft, it mainly occurs in or around train stations.

Contrary to what you may hear, taking an overnight train in India is NOT similar to European rail travel. (This refers to standard train travel, not luxury rail journeys including Palace on Wheels.) Although Indian train travel is very reliable, we only recommend it for certain travelers. If you are particularly discerning, train travel can be a sensory overload. Also, many clients request a 1st class compartment, which is private. Please be aware that many trains do not offer 1st class, and those who reserve private compartments are usually disappointed with the aesthetics.

Train travel in India can be a wonderful experience, but we want our clients to have realistic expectations. We are here to answer any questions before you decide to reserve an overnight train. Safety is our number one priority, but we want you to enjoy your Indian experience.

NEW: Delhi Airport Development Fee

This is to update you that the Government has approved on 9th Feb 09 the levy of Airport Development Fee (ADF) by the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) to charge Rs. 200 for each domestic passenger departing from Delhi and Rs. 1300 for each international passenger (including KTM & Paro), with effect from 1st March for the next three years.

This airport development fee (ADF) is ostensibly being levied to make good the revenue shortfall of Rs 1,827 crore that DIAL is facing in these slowdown times to execute the Rs 8,975-crore project. This is the first instance in India of users part-funding an upcoming airport.

Payment must be made in INR - no USD will be accepted - and the payment is per person, including children and infants. It will be collected at time of departure from the domestic or international airport, respectably.

Delhi Bomb Blasts

On Saturday, September 13, multiple bomb blasts shook the city of Delhi. Unfortunately, extremists continue to terrorize the country in an effort to interrupt its vibrancy of life. The Indians, ever resilient, bounced back within 24 hours - a strong demonstration of their unwillingness to be affected by fear or violence.

At this time, we have made no changes to our tours or customized itineraries that include Delhi and its surrounding areas. Safety is our priority and no current information displays an additional threat of terrorist activity. We will continue to monitor the daily updates and make any changes, as necessary.

It Was Only Meant As A Vacation: INDIA

This is the first book in a proposed series that will highlight the powerful or even comedic stories of people who have traveled abroad and had a life-changing experience that triggered the way they view themselves and the world. This could be a series of events, one moment, a chance meeting, a conversation, or any other experience that significantly defines a personal transformation in everyday life.

This particular book focuses on the experiences of travelers in INDIA.

This is an open submission. Please forward this email and/or distribute this information to any person or persons who may have a powerful story to share about their experiences in India.
Submissions must adhere to the following guidelines:

1. Submissions are personal narratives and must be non-fiction.
2. Submissions must be written in first person.
3. Submissions must not exceed 500 words.
4. Submissions must state location in India and any other relative facts that pertain to the context of the story.
5. Submissions should clearly express the timeline of the experience and how it affected the life of the author. Be descriptive.
6. Submissions should be proofread for grammatical errors.
7. Submissions must include the following information: Author's Name, Mailing Address, Email Address, and Contact Number.

This is an introductory submission that allows us to get a feel for your story. If your story is selected for further review, you will be contacted and asked to write a full-length version of your experience.

Development vs.Tradition

It is exciting for us to watch the way India is transitioning into a global powerhouse. In just the last 5 years, each visit overwhelmingly shows the ways of the thriving economy and developing middle class. Many of our clients express surprise at the how the larger cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, etc - parallel the visions of the West.

Although we find this growth exciting, we also hope that India maintains its essence of traditionalism. Parth hesitates each time he visits his home, the place he was born and raised. Although he appreciates the economic developments, he also cherishes the heritage which makes India so special.

A Moment of Splendor

As the owner of Sodha Travel, I continually stress the importance of personalization. It is important for us to go beyond generic and tailor at least one aspect of each experience to be unique and extraordinary. Many of our clients tell such beautiful stories of what impacted their spirit during travel to India and Nepal - ones that travel to escape but instead find themselves. For sharing these moments of splendor, we thank you. This is why we love what we do.

With this being said, we recently had our own moment of splendor. My husband is Indian, born and raised in Delhi. In November, we returned to the country for our Indian wedding ceremony. Although already married, we felt it was a non-negotiable to also celebrate his culture and traditions. Besides, these traditions I have also adopted as my own.

And so, as so many of you have shared your memories with us, I wanted to share a couple photographs with you. Thank you for being a part of the Sodha Travel experience!

Northwest Airlines: Non-stop Service to Amsterdam from PDX!
